In response to the furor over taper relief, Alistair Darling has floated several proposals to ease the burden on retiring business owners. Keeping the first £100,000 tax free has been one of the proposals, though there are a few other possibilities being suggested as well.

These feel like real knee jerk responses, poorly thought out amendments to a poorly thought out policy. Why £100,000, apart from the fact that its a media grabbing headline? Where's the proof that this is going to solve any problems for retiring business owners?
